Coaches Corner
Mark Hyde – Evo Cycling Coach
A semi professional career as a goalkeeper with a raft of local teams underpins Marks sporting achievements from the earlier part of his life and helped to develop his strong work ethic and mental discipline.
The perfect ingredients to go on and qualify for 7 Triathlon World Championships including Edmonton, Cancun and Hawaii as well as representing Great Britain! For Mark, triathlon offers a total physical challenge which brings fulfilment and satisfaction (also the opportunity to show off his all year tan in lycra) as well as that adrenaline buzz that lasts and lasts!
He brings that commitment, energy and enthusiasm into the training sessions and as a cycling coach his style has a team focus... that might sound odd for something that is an individual sport but Mark believes that in training when we all pull together and support each other as part of a team then we build our own individual capabilities even more.
Despite the strong work ethic (or perhaps because of it) Mark is equally committed to having a laugh, enjoying good food and the 'occasional' beer and has been known to come first in a triathlon after some serious nights out!
Hank Jandrell – Evo Running Club Coach
Born in Cape Town, South Africa Hank is a keen recreational runner whose enthusiasm began after seeing a chubby picture of himself a few years ago.
This gave him the motivation to get off his bum and enter his first race, the Reading Half Marathon. Being shy at first he followed a 12 week programme, training in the wee hours of the morning so as not to upset the locals seeing a wheezing, sweating beast lumbering through Windsor.
Since completing the Reading Half he then sought out a more sociable training environment and came across the Evolution Triathlon Club. Hank believes in having fun while sweating and just enjoying the ride (well run) while letting all members help shape the future of the club.
He uses the Wednesday running club session as a firm foundation on which he now adds Swimming and Biking. Hank helps coach the Intermediate/Advanced Group.
Sean Hayhow – Evo Tri Open Water Swim Coach
It all started with him looking in the mirror in 1992 and thinking what a chubbsta! Now 16 years later he has been competing in the sport of Triathlon racing all over the world and meeting fantastic inspirational people.
The sport has taken him to amazing highs from his very first 'Try a Tri' to the Ironman. In those 16 years he has competed in 14 Ironman and Long Distance events, 16 Half Ironman, 5 Powerman Duathlons and 100's of triathlon culminating in representing Great Britain in 7 world and European Championships with a 4th place finish being his best placing.
His inspiration was to see a disabled athlete from America called Randy Cadell who hand powered his way around the entire Lanzarote Ironman course... for him this was amazing and made him feel as an able body athlete very humble... so he does this so he can meet and be inspired by these kind of people.
He wants to be able to pass on all his years of knowledge and help inspire those that may one day get the same feelings out of the sport that he has.
Tracey Baumann – Evo Tri Swim Coach
Born and brought up in Zimbabwe, Tracey left Africa for foreign shores some 14 years ago. Always a member of the swimming and diving club throughout her school career, she had secretly harboured a dream of becoming a swimming coach.
After living in Germany and starting a family she returned to England and began her coaching career - first as an ASA Level 2 qualified coach. She gained invaluable experience during the next 5 years, but still felt she had more to offer.
Tracey was introduced to the Total Immersion swimming method by a colleague, and it immediately caught her imagination. An arduous training regime followed, during which all her questions about problems she had encountered over the years of teaching were answered.
Once qualified as one of a small number of Total Immersion coaches, Tracey decided that the only way to be sure of having somewhere to coach would be to have her own pool. Her passion for passing on the TI methodology and an unsinkable entrepreneurial spirit came to the fore.
She dived headfirst into opening her own Endless Pool, located in Englefield Green, on 23rd February this year, fully equipped with underwater video cameras which project realtime images of the swimmer to facilitate in-session feedback. Overwater and underwater mirrors add to the swimmers' ability to correct their stroke.
Since then she has been fighting to come up for air! However, her calm, friendly manner and constant encouragement is still very evident and you will get a great welcome at SwimSolutions.
Alan Price – Evo Tri Swim Coach
Alan is the manager of the Eton College pool. He is an ASA level 2 qualified swim coach and has over 16 years experience. If you forget your armbands or rubber ring, 'Big Al' is also a qualified lifeguard and lifeguard trainer assessor, so you can be assured of being in safe hands in one of his sessions.
As an ex Royal Marine Commando you might imagine his style is uncompromising and in a way you'd be right, except that he combines discipline with a friendly approach as he helps you to develop your swim abilities. He loves to give encouragement to those who are keen to improve their swimming.
Diverse would be an understatement for Alan's many sporting talents which include becoming the British Boxing Champion (1977) at light heavyweight. During his time as a boxer he also represented Wales and Great Britain. Alan left boxing in 1989 and was drawn to triathlon. Tri quenched his thirst for being competitive and he used it as a way of keeping fit. Over the years Alan has tried all the triathlon distances but nowadays favours the Sprint distance. (We think because he's getting too old, but would never tell him to his face as he could probably kill us with his little finger!!)
Alan is a local hero back home in Wales for all his achievements, and he is often stopped in the street by locals wanting to reminisce his boxing days with him.
As well as swimming, his water based achievements also include being a Kayak instructor. Oh, and just for good measure, Alan is a First Aider and First Aid assessor so if you stub your toe in the changing room the band aid will be applied with military precision!
